Das Janssen completed a doctorate in 2009 at Fordham University, New York, where he conducted research in dual areas of specialization: Phenomenology and Gender Studies. For the past seven years, he has served at Chicago State University, Chicago, IL, where he was awarded both tenure and early promotion to Associate Professor in 2015. Janssen's book, Phenomenal Gender, is forthcoming from Indiana University Press in Fall 2017.

Due to the budget crisis in Illinois, Dr. Janssen was one of nine tenured professors laid off by Chicago State University in July 2016.

Just what is gender, and what can be expected of it when dealing with identity, justice, and equa... more Just what is gender, and what can be expected of it when dealing with identity, justice, and equality? Ephraim Das Janssen uses a phenomenological approach to challenge and dismantle the way gender is currently understood. Janssen questions ideas that have formerly been taken for granted, as individuals did during the Civil Rights movement, the women’s movement, and the LGBT rights movement. In so doing he recasts the moral debate about gender and grounds his analysis in observable aspects such as clothing and social roles and how these can imply transgression and questioning. Janssen shakes the very core of gender through a deep engagement with Being and the structures that confine our contemporary notions.

The later Heidegger uses a term that can offer a third option: Gelassenheit. This term refers to technology, not solicitude, and yet works surprisingly well when applied experimentally to social technologies, particularly the concept of the ally, who learns to incorporate the perspective of the Other in her own worldview, which allows the release of dictatorial control and clears room for collaboration and mutual enrichment.

T he ego is first and foremost a bodily ego; it is not merely a surface entity, but is itself the... more T he ego is first and foremost a bodily ego; it is not merely a surface entity, but is itself the projection of a surface." 1 Freud's famous claim has sparked a host of responses within psychoanalysis, phenomenology, and queer theory. Gayle Salamon's excellent new book addresses the ways in which these fields speak of the body. In order to highlight the scope and limits of embodiment and sexual difference, she examines how bodies that are not normatively sexed and gendered raise questions about relationships between the psychological and the material and how these relationships may be embodied and lived. Noting that a) the philosophical canon has only rarely addressed the challenge to traditional accounts of embodiment that gender variation poses, and also that b) the nascent field of trans studies does not yet utilize the theories of embodiment that phenomenology and psychoanalytic theory offer, Salamon aims in Assuming a Body to "bring psychoanalytic, phenomenological, and transgendered bodies proximate enough so that their similarities might become more visible and their differences might be brought into productive tension with one another" (10). This is not a book about why one thinker's theories can beat up another thinker's theories. There are not so much winners and losers as there are pieces of a puzzle that fit together 1. We are so committed to gender norms that we ostracize or even kill those who violate them, yet rarely question the reasonableness of our expectations. Gender needs to be examined from a phenomenological stance, a) because of the ubiquity of gendering, b) because presuppositions regarding gender go largely unquestioned in most Daseins' everyday existence, and c) because cases in which actual fact contravenes our expectations offer insight into what it means to be human.
